WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN SELECTING THE FINAL YEAR PROJECT:
During my final year at the university, I was given a choice to either create a fully functional E-Commerce website or develop a game for pc using any game engine with character designs and Vector art and complete graphics illustration for my final year project as the rest of the projects were way out of my jurisdiction as a computer science student if you know what I mean.
Choosing The Right Final Year Project??..
As a gamer, I had to choose a game development project as it fits right in my vicinity of interests, All my teammates at the time were shocked to see me selecting a fully functional playable game for the final year project as making a website was quite easy, all you need to do was go to Wix website builder, choose a category for the website in our case it would be some e-commerce site and last but not the least buying the domain name from any of the web hosting sites and it a matter of a day or two I would have created an operational website.
however, I decided to go for something new that I would never experienced before in my life to create a game in about six months with complete character designs, game art, vector images, and sprite sheets, with complete graphics illustration with no background skills and knowledge about it.
Valuable Lessons and Developing New Skills:
For the first few weeks, I was dangling between two game engines Unity and Unreal Engine for my game as I wasn't sure which one would be best for beginners so after about a month of research and brainstorming, we as a team decided to go for Unity. Now the next phase of development was to actually first learn the basics of Unity and C#. Initially, I got the hang of the basics of Unity by creating my first Hello World Program in C# and dragging and dropping the game assets into scenes, and playing around with its transformations, positions, rotations, etc.
However, time was of the essence and we had about 4 months of time left for the submission of the project with its entire documentation and reports. At this time to be honest I started to panic a little as most of the other teams had created their beta versions of their projects and our project had bearly scratched the surface of being stuck in selecting the genre for the game. In about a few weeks we had to hand in our initial report on the project after this some of my teammates adjusted with other classmates as they thought our project was doomed and left our group high and dry.
The DeadLine Fallacy In my Opinion:
Now I was only left with 3 members to finalize the project so we decided to work day in and out and worked with confidence and self-belief that at the end of the day, everything will be fine by the grace of God and it really did surprisingly!! then the day came when our game was completed and we submitted the final report just 2 days before the deadline, we were glad that the nightmare was over. Quite surprisingly we score an A grade on the project, and shortly after the entire semester result, we graduated with a smile on our faces.
